Horse

The BC SPCA has identified serious animal welfare concerns in its Report on Horse Slaughter Practices in Canada submitted last month to federal authorities. We are now calling on the public to write to Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz to demand improvements to the monitoring of the slaughter of all animals at federally registered processing plants. Read more and learn how you can help ensure government officials take immediate action.

Dr. Temple Grandin

Named by TIME magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of 2010, and the subject of a recent critically acclaimed HBO biopic, autistic scientist Dr. Temple Grandin will share her insights on animal behaviour and welfare on Saturday, June 19 in Vancouver. The lecture is part of the 2010 BC SPCA Educational Series and is presented by Bosley’s Pet Food Plus. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students and are available online, but hurry before they’re sold out.

There are three days left to register your pet or vote in the 2011 Animal Lovers’ Calendar contest. Visit spca.bc.ca/calendarcontest to meet a few of our contest hopefuls, including an adventurous cat who sails the B.C. coast, a brave dog facing cancer and a blind Princess. Each $1 donated in support of an animal will count as one vote. The top 12 animals with the most votes on May 17 at noon will win.

BC SPCA Staff with four-legged friend

“Kids love our camps,” says Leiki Salumets, education coordinator for the BC SPCA’s summer day camps. “I should know — growing up I was an SPCA camper and it set my career path to help animals.” During the week, campers are immersed in animal-themed activities to learn about pets, wildlife and farm animals. Online registration for Greater Vancouver camps (seven locations) is under way; Victoria and Nanaimo registration begins June 1.

Donor of the Month: Craig Naherniak

Craig Naherniak

With 18 years of commitment as an employee, adopter and supporter of the monthly PAW Plan since the program’s inception, Craig Naherniak is a member of the BC SPCA family who exemplifies dedication. As general manager of humane education, Naherniak oversees educational programs with a concentration on inspiring kids to become engaged in the mission work of the BC SPCA. “I feel as though my donations not only contribute to the success of the organization, but through youth education, are investments in the future of B.C.”

 Paw Patter

Dr. Temple Grandin views autism as a way station on the road from animals to humans, putting autistic people in a position to translate “animal talk.” She asserts that animals are much smarter than anyone ever imagined, and in some cases they may even be brilliant.
