October 2014

Dear friend,

The BC SPCA has dedicated October to raising awareness about farm animals, beginning with World Farm Animals Day on October 2nd. Created in memory of Mahatma Gandhi, whose birthday is the same date, World Farm Animals Day is observed in dozens of countries all over the world.

Ask yourself, ‘what do farm animals want?’, then learn how you can make a difference in their lives this October, and every month.

Sincerely,

The BC SPCA Farm Animal Welfare Team

P.S. You can help spread awareness about the BC SPCA Farm Animal Welfare department and our many programs. Forward this email to friends and colleagues.

Lasser Ranches farmsense

Riding the winds of change in Chetwynd

Charlie Lasser has always treated his animals differently because he believes in the BC SPCA’s vision that all animals should enjoy, as a minimum, the five freedoms. The cattle at Lasser Ranches (Chetwynd, B.C.) experience open space and pasture year round and are always treated with care and respect. In 2013, with over 500-head of cattle on site, Lasser Ranches became the largest SPCA Certified cattle ranch to date.

Learn about the challenges and opportunities discovered by Charlie Lasser as he transitioned Lasser Ranches to SPCA Certified.

dairy cattle action farm sense

Speak up in support of stronger protection for dairy cattle

Earlier this year, an animal cruelty investigation involving a Chilliwack dairy farm led the BC SPCA to recommend charges under B.C.’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCA Act), as well as the Criminal Code of Canada. The BC SPCA has also made a formal recommendation to the provincial government that animal care standards for dairy cattle be included as regulations to the PCA Act.

Write to the Minister of Agriculture and your MLA to let them know you want to see standards of care for all farm animals adopted into B.C.’s animal cruelty legislation. Take action now!

A SPCA Certified farmer’s beliefs on how farm animals are meant to live

Sumas Mountain Farms (Abbotsford, B.C.) has been SPCA Certified since 2010. The farm raises beef cattle, pigs, and poultry. Program staff recently visited the farm and learned that co-owner, Trevor Newton, has firm beliefs about how farm animals are meant to live, and what we as consumers owe them. Watch his video interview to hear for yourself!
