A North Saanich woman who allowed her dog to suffer with a broken jaw, pneumonia and a collapsed lung has been banned from owning animals for three years after pleading guilty to animal cruelty under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Iris Crystal Jones was handed the ban for neglecting a friendly young pit bull named Sherbert.
Are you independent, brave, bold and well-liked? People born in the Year of the Tiger are.
To celebrate the Year of the Tiger, the BC SPCA encourages you to consider adopting not a real tiger but the next best thing — a cat, and preferably an older, more mature adult cat.
We can pretty much guarantee you will find a regal, independent, highly likable and possibly brave companion at one of our branches or satellite adoption centres located inside Bosley’s stores.
Thanks to our scientific report(.pdf download) on the welfare of ducks force-fed to produce foie gras, some Vancouver restaurants have dropped this cruelly produced item from their menus.
Incredibly, many refuse to change.
That’s why the hundreds of thousands of ducks raised in tiny cages and force-fed daily in Canada need you to speak for them. Please look out for foie gras on menus. Let us know where you see it and write to the restaurant, asking them to stop.

The start of a new year always brings with it new hope, but for the thousands of animals we care for, 2010 will also be fraught with uncertainty. Many will find themselves in life-threatening situations caused by animal cruelty, disease and even raging wildfires.
It’s during times like these that the animals need heroes. You can be a hero by helping the staff and volunteers of the BC SPCA relieve the suffering of these animals so that they, too, can make 2010 a year of new hope.
Have you ever had your cat scratch or bite you for absolutely no reason while you were petting her? It could be that your cat is experiencing the discomfort of static electricity, or the receptors on her skin are overstimulated.
