up to 450,000 kittens in just seven years?
Cat overpopulation has reached a
crisis level in B.C., and as part of Spay/Neuter Awareness month we ask you to
help your community prevent the tragedy of unwanted animals.
This month, have
your pet sterilized, advocate for a low-cost spay/neuter program in your municipality or help cover
the cost of a cat spay at the SPCA at our Pawsitive
Gifts site. You can make a life-saving difference!

Possum is an adorable four-year-old Dachshund who had never experienced the simple pleasure of going for a walk... until he came into BC SPCA care.
Prior to arriving at the BC SPCA Maple Ridge Branch, this handsome boy and his other canine roomates were not being adequately cared for by their owner.
Understandably, today Possum is a work-in-progress and still needs some socialization.
However, once Possum trusts you, he loves you with all his adorable little heart.

Badger (aka Milo) and his six siblings were originally found in a creek near Williams Lake - certainly no place for young puppies!
Thankfully, this rough start at life seems to have had little impact on Badger's infectious energy and spirit.

Great Balls! February is
Spay/Neuter Awareness Month
 February is Spay/Neuter Awareness month, and as part
of its activities, the BC SPCA is holding a free
spay/clinic for feral cats on Feb. 24 at its Vancouver Animal Hospital.
The clinic will provide free sterilizations, medical exams and treatment,
permanent identification, treatment for parasites and vaccines for feral cats.
Free clinics are also being offered at the BC SPCA’s spay/neuter clinics in
Prince George and Kamloops later this spring.

Help create a sweeter future for
animals in need
 Across Canada animal lovers are a baking up a storm!
Feb. 25 is the first-ever National Cupcake Day™ for SPCAs & Human Societies.
Throughout February, Cupcake Party hosts will be offering cupcakes as thanks
for donations made to animals in need. It’s not too late to start baking to save
lives.

Canadian cattle and horses need your voice
Each year
in Canada millions of cattle are raised in the beef industry.
The national
Codes of Practice that dictate minimum standards of care are now open for
public comment.
This is your chance to advocate for their welfare!
Canada’s code
for horses is also open for online comment until Feb. 14, so don’t miss your
chance to speak out!

Get involved to help end the

We’re excited that communities are beginning to recognize
the welfare and taxpayer costs of cat overpopulation.
Targeted initiatives
are springing up throughout the province to help decrease the number of cats
being born.
These include bylaw changes, low-income spay and neuter
programs and trap-neuter-release programs.

This month, the BC SPCA is offering a series of “Healthy Pets, Happy Pets” youth workshops
around the province.
Kids will have a fantastic time learning
all about pet health and what they can do to take the best care possible of
their own pets.
They’ll spend a day playing animal-themed games, making
pet-friendly toys and treats and taking a special behind-the-scenes tour of an
animal shelter.

Happy ending for dogs rescued from dumpster
Two heeler-cross dogs rescued from a dumpster outside of
Williams Lake on Jan. 22 are doing well and are awaiting adoption into loving
homes.
The dogs, who survived in the dumpster for five days in
freezing temperatures, were immediately taken for veterinary treatment and are
now in the care of the Williams Lake SPCA.

Donor of the month: Anchors Inn
At Anchors Inn Waterfront Cabins in Ucluelet,
they welcome you and your beloved pets too!
Rather than charge a nightly fee for pets,
they request a $20 per pet donation, which goes to their local SPCA.
Marilyn
and Lance of Anchors Inn have been donating the
proceeds of their 'dog fee' since 2003 to the BC SPCA and we are so thankful
for their long-standing support.
In celebration of their generosity, we
encourage our shelters to name homeless animals “Brogan”, in honour of their
late beloved dog.

Paw Patter - Sex and the kitty
Yes, it’s true, kittens can have kittens.
Cats begin to reach sexual
maturity in as little as five months. Knowing this is especially important if
your young cat ever goes outside.
To prevent accidental litters, get your kitten spayed
or neutered before it’s too late!
