The new school year has begun! Here are a few ways you can help animals in and out of the classroom.

Start a club. There’s strength in numbers! If you want to make a big impact for animals, get others involved too. Get your free school club action guide. Learn how to register your club and receive a welcome package in the mail.

Organize a bottle or blanket drive. School is a great place to take action for animals even if you don’t have a club. You can raise funds for your local shelter with a bottle drive – and help the Earth by recycling at the same time! Collecting old towels and blankets is also a great way to help homeless animals.

Tell your teachers about us. Want everyone in your class – yourself included! – to learn more about animals? Just tell your teachers about our programs.

ekids_Adoption-story-Lucy_300.pngOriginally found abandoned on the front doorstep of the Prince Rupert SPCA, Lucy was transferred to the Victoria SPCA where she quickly found her forever home.

We adopted Lucy two weeks ago and we couldn’t be happier. Lucy is a sweetheart – she has totally wrapped us around her paw.

She helps us read the paper in the morning (even if we have to read the same page many times because she is lying on it). She cuddles up to us when we nap (giving lessons on how to get the best nap) and watches TV with those of us who are night owls.

Lucy is a quiet and affectionate little lady until she climbs the scratching post – then she bats the toy mouse back to whoever she cons into standing there, throwing and fetching the mouse.

After our former cat of 16-and-a-half years passed, we were very sad and a little hesitant to adopt again. But, after a few months, we found that our house felt empty. Lucy has more than filled the gap in our hearts. She is in her forever home and we are happy to contribute to the BC SPCA to help you continue your good work.

Thank you to Lucy’s new family for turning a sad story into a happy one!

ekids_instadino_300x505.pngThank you to everyone who entered our “Insta-dino” photo contest and “Thinking like a dinosaur” writing contest, both featured in the summer issue of Bark! magazine.

The winners have now been chosen!

The winner of the photo contest, and recipient of a National Geographic Wildlife Wow! Tyrannosaurus rex action figure, is Isla Evans, 6, from Kamloops.

The winner of the writing contest, and recipient of Dinosaurs: A Visual Encyclopedia, is Cyrus Lau, 11, from West Vancouver. Read Cyrus’s winning story.

Congratulations!

ekids_Furry-Friend-Dexter_300.pngSeptember’s Furry Friend of the Month is Dexter, a handsome three-year-old kitty.

Dexter arrived at the shelter as a stray. When his owner didn’t claim him, he was placed for adoption. This sweet guy is the purrfect combination of cuddly and playful. While he loves being around people, he’s not so keen on the company of other animals so he should be the only pet in the house.

Dexter is currently up for adoption at the Abbotsford SPCA. Please note that Dexter may have found his forever home since this article was written, but you can find all animals available for adoption right now at spca.bc.ca/adopt.
