Bruno and Charlie are both rescues, Bruno from being abandoned on the out skirts of the Cowichan Valley and Charlie left behind at a high-kill shelter in California.
Bruno was first to be rescued from the shelter in Duncan. He was a scared unkept little guy who had obviously been on the streets a few days and been abused in his previous home. He was afraid of humans, nipping and growling, especially if you touched his tail. The previous owner was contacted and as the story goes did not take any interest in this poor little guy who he had abandoned on the streets, directing the shelter to keep him he has a girlfriend with kids who don't like the dog. So Bruno was up for adoption and my daughter seen him, love at first sight, for her at least. He came home and with patience and love he has overcome many obstacles, fear of people, fear of other dogs, fear of cuddles, and fear of quick movements. While still not a huge fan of 'bath time' he is proud of himself once it is over, especially on a walk as he struts head held high. He has been part of our lives for over 3 years and loves his cuddles, classical music (he sings), the dog park, hikes, and wading in the water. Living the life he is, and loving every minute!
Charlie came to us 1 year ago. I found her on a rescue site and once again it was love at first sight. Her story is she was left at a high-kill shelter and when rescued she was also very scared. It is unclear how she lost her eye, but the disability does not slow her down. The day I went to Vancouver to pick her up she was timid and quiet, not anymore! The trip on the ferry she wanted to sleep but fear of the unknown prevented rest. Once back in Duncan we stopped to buy a new bed, her old one was less than 'ok', and a new collar & leash. When we arrived home she was disoriented so the obvious step to take was a walk around the neighbourhood with Bruno. Once we got going they quickly started to bond and walked in tandum. Next was a nice warm bath, what girl doesn't like the 'spa' treatment, and this little girl completely enjoyed it. She was so messy I had no idea she had a white blaze on her head. Once washed, blow dryed, fluffed and puffed, she curled up with me and was quickly snoring. Over the next weeks a vet check, grooming at the groomers, and walks brought out this little girls personality. Sweet and loving.
It has been a year and these two little dogs are best friends, bringing many laughs with their antics.
Oh yes, Charlie is the one on her back and Bruno is the guy wondering why!
