Update on Brownie:
Brownie went in for surgery this past weekend where the vet was able to closely examine the injury and believes that Brownie’s condition went untreated for one to two months. Our hearts go out to Brownie, who was living outside in the cold with his untreated injury causing him extreme pain for such a long time. His body had built up so much scar tissue around the bone trying to heal the injury that it made the surgery very difficult.
Brownie’s wound went untreated for so long that he now faces a greater risk of complications including infection and delayed healing. He will require more specialized care to help him recover. SPCA staff are applying a cold pack covered in a towel on Brownie’s leg two to three times per day for the first 72 hours after surgery to minimize swelling. Brownie will need physiotherapy to help his leg maintain normal joint motion and improve circulation to help him heal.
Brownie will not be able to play with other dogs or run around for at least two months. He will need to rest in his kennel without any exercise aside from going out to do his business. Brownie will be on pain medication, antibiotics to prevent infection and anti-inflammatory medication to help with the pain and swelling in the leg.
The fracture will need about three months to heal. Brownie will then need radiographs at the vet to ensure the bone has healed and have his pins surgically removed.
------
Gorgeous Saint Bernard boy Brownie, was brought into care with a gunshot wound to his leg! Vets think that he was shot 1-2 weeks earlier and has been suffering in pain every day since.
X-rays show that the shot fractured his right hind leg and the bullet fragment is still embedded into deep in his leg. He will require a specialized surgery to remove the bullet and stabilize his leg with pins temporarily, while it heals. These pins will stick out of his legs so he will be on a careful exercise routine and will need to be kept from licking them.
On top of his gunshot wound, Brownie had an extremely matted coat with a big rash around his neck and under his ears from a heavy flea infestation. He will need to be completely shaved and treated for his fleas, which were apparently so bad that as staff began his treatment, they were watching them all jump off of him! He will also need treatment for internal and external parasites. It sadly hasn’t been an easy journey for Brownie.
Brownie is a very docile and loving dog. His calm and very sweet temperament shines through despite the extreme pain he must be experiencing right now. He has lived a very challenging life as an outdoor only dog, and he’s absolutely loving the warmth of inside! He will go outside for a pee and eagerly run back inside to get cozy. He has a highly social personality and is blossoming as he is surrounded by people!
He truly deserves a second chance at life to experience the joys of being a loved family pet. Will you donate to Brownie’s care today?
Personal updates for Brownie will be provided to anyone who donates to his campaign.
*Goal includes: surgery, medication, treatment, regular health check, and daily care for Brownie until he’s ready for adoption. If his medical costs and cost of care is less than is raised in his name, additional funds will provide care for other animals.
