A poor Barred Owl was found lying still at the side of the road in the Cordova Bay area. The owl was hit by a car while trying to forage for food at the side of the busy road. A concerned member of the public brought the owl in to Wild ARC for assessment and treatment.
An x-ray was given to the owl to see if it had an internal breaks or bleeding. Its eyes were closed and it was found to have suffered head trauma. It was very lethargic and could not stand properly. Our staff gave the owl medications, fluids, and a quiet place to rest. They will continue to monitor and treat the owl until it is able to properly fly and is ready for release.
You can help rehabilitate this owl by donating towards it's care. It will take many hours of specialized staff care, feeding and flight-testing to allow the owl the time and support it needs to recover.
Many times people will throw food waste or apple cores at the side of the road, as they are compostable. This can be extremely dangerous because many animals including raptors, will try to fly down and catch the rodents eating the food scraps and get hit by a car in the process. The situation with the Barred Owl that is currently in care may have been prevented. Please make sure that all waste and compost is properly disposed of to prevent injury and situations like this from occurring in the future.
Save this owl by donating to it's medical care today.
